This kingly deer is just entering into velvet, when they shed their antlers and grow new, larger ones.

You can tell by the bit of blood at the base.

I've always loved deer. They're beautiful creatures. And reading David Clement Davies' "Firebringer" when I was young probably instilled something too.

This is a black-tailed deer, probably a mule deer; it can be hard to tell.

Beautiful shot! Love it!

Randomly: I think it's just the Blacktail Deer. Mule Deer have much larger ears, and wider spread between the beams of the antlers. Blacktail and Whitetail share the similar racks.

Yeah I think you're right, I've seen a whole lot more of them now (they're on the road I walk on to get to work every day!) and they're definitely just regular Blacktails.

I really love this picture, probably all the details on it. It's just...gorgeous.

But the placement of the deer is right smack in the center of the photo - maybe next time try a different angle of it? Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great photo, and I know how hard it is to get a shot of a wild animal (and sometimes domesticated). The focus is great as you can see every little stitch of fur on him, not to mention he's actually looking right at the camera. :+fav:

Thanks :D
But the deer isn't centered. He's definitely frame-right.

Well it was hard for me to put into words, and still is. xD I know it's on the right, I was just talking about maybe cutting off a little portion of it, so to make it kinda unique and the viewer can...not guess but...again, hard. ^^; I'm not trying to argue, I'm just trying to explain myself. :P
